Working with The Station and TASC this semester on Building the Block was a rewarding experience in more ways than one. Not only were we able to contribute to the block party itself, but we were able to take what we gleaned from the human–centered points of intervention and create a book of research findings to give back to them.
The whole process from start to finish this semester packed so much into my knowledge of HCD and really enabled me to see the possibilities of working with communities as well as some of the challenges. I think that the HCD mindsets can be applied to so many different things in design when you’re looking at it from a more general viewpoint. I have found myself within the last month or so being more willing to learn from failure and prototype and just make things because of the way that we all approached the work for Building the Block. It also taught me a lot about my strengths as a designer. Being able to pick up the pieces and take leadership when I need to was a valuable experience for me and helps me understand better how working collaboratively can be both challenging and rewarding.
